Wildflower Law

Where to find details
of Laws regarding Wildflowers

The wildflower law of each country and/or each block will be different... but some things will apply throughout the world. So a brief summary of those principles which will remain the same no matter where you live...

The transportation of plants and seeds from one country to another is inadvisable because of the possibility of transfering pests and diseases. Some plants which are harmless enough in their native lands become invasive when transported to another environment... either their natural predators are missing or the new situation suits them better and they grow to monstrous proportions. In the UK we have vast problems with Japanese Knotweed, also there are problems with some imported pond plants which have got out into the wild, and then there are the wild Rhododendrons... I'm sure you get the picture.

It is therefore illegal to import plants and seeds from one country to another in many cases. If you want to import plant material, the wise and responsible thing to do is to check with the Customs & Excise department of [ideally] both the country you wish to export from and the country you wish to import into before you consider buying any plant material. Do not risk your native land by breaking the prevailing laws.

Another thing to take into account is the source of the material you are considering purchasing... please take the time to visit Traffic, which deals with explaining the problems created by the trafficing in rare flora and fauna. Extinction could be the end result for some plants collected illegally from the wild. A useful link which takes you to 'Traffic'
