These officially recognized bodies can help and inform you in many and various fields... with wild and cultivated plants being the top priority. Explanations regarding each body, and the work they seek to carry out, precede the individual links. More links will be added on an ongoing basis, as and when they come to our notice. The general purpose of this page is to bring to your notice some of the many fascinating and worthwhile groups... many of which you can join. After all, the more people who join, the bigger the difference we can effect.
Although Chelsea Flower Show is the first thought of most people when thinking of the RHS... and the show is certainly a 'not to be missed' experience for anyone interested in flowers or gardens... it is most certainly NOT the only reason to visit the Royal Horticultural Society's website. People come from all over the world just to visit the Chelsea Flower Show, but, did you know that the RHS has gardens in several locations within the UK? If you visit the website do have a look at the videos they have for sale, there are fascinating choices. One video which I can watch again and again is the one on South Africa. Members of the RHS get many benefits - see the website for details.
Whether you decide to become a member, or not, the RHS website is a must!
The Wildlife Trusts organization is a leading conservation charity which operates throughout the UK. The President is Professor David Bellamy, OBE - the famous botanist... Miriam Rothschild is a Vice President and The Prince of Wales is a Patron. If you type in David Bellamy into the search box at the top of the home page you will get a long list of interesting places to visit on the site.
You can join online and you do not have to live in a particular area to join that society.
Wildlife Trust sites are devoted to the conservation of all types of habitat, their flora and their fauna. There are holidays in so many fascinating places... I haven't used this facility myself as we always holiday somewhere in the UK with our dog... but Wildlife Trust people are always friendly and welcoming, and the website gives you full details of their policies and aspirations ... It is possible to download a copy of 'Plant Diversity Challenge' at the bottom of the page on Global Strategy for Plant Conservation on the home page. My next mention is Traffic. If you are familiar with it's work, I'm sure you won't mind me taking a little time to explain it to others, as it is an extremely worthwile organization. You can, by the way, become a Friend of Traffic - see the website. Traffic is trying to ensure that the trade in wild plants and animals is not a threat to the conservation of nature. A difficult and somewhat dangerous mission in far too many cases.
