The Keukenhof Garden
The Keukenhof Garden was established in 1949 as a show ground for Dutch bulb growers. The mayor thought that it would be a good idea to have a place where spring flowers, daffodils and tulip flowers that were grown in the Dutch bulb fields would be shown off to the buyers.
Recently, I was lucky enough to be taken to Keukenhof, which is near Lisse in the Netherlands. Nothing that I'd read about prepared me for the stunning beauty of the world's largest flower garden! The day we were there it was a wonderful spring day with warm sunshine. The large trees in the garden are home to many birds who were entertaining us with their beautiful songs. Set against this backdrop of big trees and birdsongs are around 7,000,000 (seven million) flower bulbs in every imaginable size and colour you can think of. The original idea of the gardens was to present a flower exhibit where growers from all over the Netherlands and Europe could show off their hybrids - and help the Netherlands export industry (it is the world's largest exporter of flowers). Keukenhof has been the world's largest flower garden for over fifty years. It's open between the last week in March and mid May every year and if you're anywhere near Holland then it's well worth a detour to see this amazing spectacle of spring flowers. Covering 32 hectares, this wonderful garden is a real feast for your eyes and a joy to behold. Return to Home page from Keukenhof Garden
