Flower Arranging Plants

Flower arranging plants...

Planning is THE most important step in deciding what plants to grow for flower arranging. Or for gardening of any type, for that matter (see our page on Wild Flower Gardening for general tips)... but for flower arranging there are a few extra considerations to take into account, over and above those on the wild flower gardening page.

If you are fairly new to flower arranging then the following few questions may help in deciding which way your flower arranging plants planning should go.

Which kind of flower arranging do you admire?

Have you got suitable books to help you in deciding the plant material you need for your arrangements? If not I would recommend The New Flower Arranger by Fiona Barnett.

(Read all about it on the Flower Arranging page - you will find a convenient link back at the bottom of this flower arranging plants page.)

Another important question is... how large an area of garden [or tubs, window boxes & hanging baskets] can you devote to flower arranging plants?

The answers to the above queries should point you in the right direction.

A factor to take into consideration when choosing your flower arranging plants is that in most cases flower arrangers use more greenery/foliage than florists. And further to this... there is normally little choice of foliage at florists and other flower selling outlets.

You may therefore consider planting foliage plants as a priority... just a couple of words of caution.

One, most are very slow growing.

Two, in Spring, when the leaves are first coming out the sap isn't advanced enough to allow the foliage to be picked and conditioned and used in an arrangement. All you will get is sad droopy leaves and branches... most disappointing, as the fresh leaves look SO beautiful.

You could consider a few carefully chosen evergreens to help with the latter problem.

Buying flowering plants for flower arranging needs careful consideration too... whether you choose to go for perennials, bulbs, shrubs, trees, or just for an annual flush of colour or choose to use both needs deciding in advance.

As an alternative annuals could be used for the first year or two, with small perennial plants interspersed and allowed to grow, before they are used for picking.

Another thing to consider is what is available to buy at the florists?

If something is readily available to buy, maybe you could use your space more wisely and productively growing something more unusual and which is not available in the many flower outlets.
