Flower Perfume
Fragrance, Scent, Perfume, Smell
Flower Perfume... by whatever name you call it, scent, perfume, smell, or fragrance, it can be a real delight, and can transport you to different times and places, according to your own personal associations... I hope you have a good 'nose' for it, and can enjoy it to the full! It must be very sad for those who are not able to enjoy different fragrances... who have little, or no, sense of smell.
Gardens would be much poorer places without our scented herbs, flowers, shrubs, and trees.
Scent molecules are released into the air. Mid-afternoon is the best time of all to enjoy flower perfume, the fragrance is at its best because the warmth of the sun has brought it out for all to enjoy. In reality it is an advert to the polinators which all flowers need, and they are at their busiest on warm afternoons.

It is known that the ancient Egyptians loved scented plants... in particular the blue Lotus flowers are associated with them, and they are represented in many ancient carvings on various buildings.
Currently a large area south of Cairo is devoted to the growth of Jasmine for the International perfume trade. It is an extremely labour intensive business and the amount of blooms which are used to extract the essential oils and create what is used as the basis of the most expensive and luxurious perfumes is quite mind boggling! No wonder it is SO expensive.

If you want to make the best of flower perfume in your own garden there are two main items to consider... shelter and sun. If you can create a sheltered spot this helps the fragrance density, as draughts and turbulance will disperse the fragrance molecules. Sun will open the flowers fully and make them release their scent more readily.
Plan your garden carefully, and you can have scented plants and flowers all year round.
We each of us have our own particular favorites, whether they are strong scents like the flower perfume of the old fashioned roses, or the delicate fragrance of wildflowers like primroses or bluebells. You can have perennials or annuals, or a mixture, trees shrubs... there are just too many plants to mention...
You can plan from the ground up... for example... camomile, thyme, for walking on; lavender, fennel, to brush against; lily of the valley in early spring; wallflowers, sweet peas, grown as annuals; roses, lilies and pinks for summer; mock orange [philadelphus] and honeysuckle, both personal favorites; and glorious Lime trees... to the flower perfume you can add the relaxing hum of the bees!

For all of us who love flowers and flower perfume another joy is the actual choice of your perfumed plants. What better excuse for regular visits to your favorite garden centre... see what smells good every month [or fortnightly, or weekly!]. Your only limiting factor could be lack of space! Could be you need to move... for a bigger garden.
Another idea is to locate a book which deals with perfumed flowers which thrive in your country and area...
