Cactus Flowers

Cacti and Succulents

Cacti in the UK are mostly grown as houseplants. Cactus flowers are normally large in proportion to the plant itself. The flowers are quite often regarded as an optional bonus by amateur growers... but you will find that the professionals are quite adept at getting their prize specimen into bloom.

Visit any flower show from Chelsea to quite small regional shows, and you will find one or more stands of extremely impressive cacti. There you can ask questions on best practice for growing and keeping your plants at their best. You can also buy both small plants and also seed in most cases.

There is a vast variety in form and habit. From succulents to the barrel shaped prickly cacti, and from the potentially quite tall and straight growing cactus to the Easter and Christmas cacti... to name but a few of the options open to the new enthusiast.

Some people insist that you shouldn't move the Easter and Christmas cacti if you want them to flower... mine don't seem to mind at all [one thing they don't like is being over-watered] though they do seem to flower at any time of the year, bar when they are supposed to! The cactus flowers on the Christmas cactus seem to appear about 3 or 4 times a year and for quite a long period of flowering each time.

Remember no cactus wants to be watered too often. Adding grit and sand to the compost is a great plus for drainage. They love sun in most cases, and do not require rich soils or feeding.
