How to find Places to Visit...
Both Individual Gardens and Areas Famous for their Flora

First of all, let me recommend that you look out for LOCAL places of interest and places to visit.

It is a well-known fact that if you live in a certain area, you will be the last to have visited the local tourism hotspots. People will come from miles around, even abroad, to see something which is on our own doorsteps, yet we have never taken the trouble to visit! We are all guilty of this habit.

Yet if we are interested in setting up a garden based on our local wild flowers, we must first find out what plants best grow wild in our local conditions!

To find local places to visit you can try the local papers, and also magazines - your county may have a locally based magazine - [see our books page for magazine subscriptions];  also seek 'word of mouth' recommendations. 

Then how about visiting your local library... the librarians are usually a fund of information and knowledge, and they also stock local leaflets about places of interest and open days.

So let's look at the local area first, then when we are ready to travel further afield, either within our own country, or abroad, we can use the following hints to find places to visit.

Another very productive way to search for places to visit is to visit the National Gardens Scheme website.

The National Garden Scheme website has links to places to visit in the USA, Japan, Scotland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Australia, and England and Wales. This link provides you with a fascinating choice of gardens to visit, some will be fairly local to you, and for some you will have to plan days out. All wonderful gardens in their own right, and in many cases charities will benefit from the scheme.


Both The Wildlife Trusts and English Nature will have many places of interest which you can visit, displayed on their websites.


Another idea is to visit the websites of The National Trust and the Forestry Commission. It is possible to stay in some National Trust properties, and the Forestry Commission have cabins on sites in various truly beautiful parts of the UK.

Your local tourist information office will have details of many local places of interest to visit, and you will be able to find its whereabouts in your Yellow Pages. Quite often you will find a Tourist Information department in the local Museum.
